THE ATLAS FOLIO
A large format photography book celebrating France joining SKA Observatory.
On the occasion of France's entry into the SKA Observatory (SKAO), and during Paris Photo 2026, artists Tommaso Fiscaletti and Nic Grobler present The Atlas Folio, a large-format artist's book that represents the culmination of Hemelliggaam or The Attempt To Be Here Now, a multimedia project developed in South Africa over the past ten years.
The presentation will take place across three events, from 12 to 14 November, at the Observatoire de la Côte d'Azur in Nice, the Observatoire de Paris – PSL and, finally, during Paris Photo, in collaboration with the Dutch publishing house The Eriskay Connection. The events at the historic French observatories, attended by Chiara Ferrari (Director of SKAFrance), will offer an opportunity to discover the major scientific ambitions of the SKA project and the involvement of the French scientific community, while also exploring its human and cultural dimensions through the presentation of The Atlas Folio. At the centre of these events will be this artist's book, entirely handmade in a limited edition of three copies, measuring 70 × 54 cm. Printed on museum-quality fine art photographic paper, the book draws inspiration from the great atlases and elephant folios of the 17th to 19th centuries. The Atlas Folio, a synthesis of the work produced by the artists, functions simultaneously as a document, an archive, and an art object.
