THE PERSISTENCE OF WISHES  a project by Leaflood (Tommaso Fiscaletti and Alice Marrollo)

A new ancient world

by Roberto Mutti

"Looking at the children playing you become enchanted the way in which they identify themselves and with what they do in situations guided by a prodigious imagination that transports them to a place where time is suspended and the space is open to endless possibilities. So deep is this experience that it leaves in each of us a strong trace that, rationality removed, re-emerges with our most persistent impulses tied to desires that are not to be satisfied, but to allow us to consider the dimension of “possible”. Respectful of these drives but bold enough to investigate in depth the dynamics, Tommaso Fiscaletti & Alice Marrollo create a situation that is both an artistic research, a scientific experiment, and theater, an exhibition and performative experience. You cannot focus on one of these because, as it has been designed, “The Persistence of Whishes” is simply all of these. Linked by an intimate complicity that led them to identify with the Collective “Leaflood” with which they sign, the two are designers, directors, observers, analysts and demiurges of this. The elements they used are essential: a theatrical setting and at the center of the stage, a large wicker chair on which sits a surprisingly large teddy bear. Lined up for the round, the players find it natural to approach to the fake bear, sit on his lap and whisper in his ear the desires that would not otherwise be revealed, through the childish fear of them not being realised. Leaflood uses photography and video to act as a neutral witness able to capture the different attitudes (shyness, confidence, abandonment) with which men and women of all ages believe in dialogue with a bear whilst in reality, engaging instead with oneself. At this point, Tommaso Fiscaletti & Alice Marrollo move the semantic level of the whole process creating a series of portraits in the style of the old "carte de visite" with a sepia tone, mounted on cardboard, stamped signage of the photographer as a trademark in an ironic allusion to the relationship with the past. So, as with children's games, time loses its fluidity, the space, its rationality and it's comforting to be guided by two skilled craftsmen of a world that, like the brain, is extremely old and new together."

THE PERSISTENCE OF WISHES un progetto di Leaflood (Tommaso Fiscaletti e Alice Marrollo)
