The Atlas Folio is a large-format artist’s book forming the culmination of Tommaso Fiscaletti and Nic Grobler’s long term project Hemelliggaam or The Attempt To Be Here Now.

More than a decade in the making, Hemelliggaam — Afrikaans for ‘heavenly body’ — is an archive of original photographs, video works, and installations exploring the profound links between humanity, astronomy, and the South African landscape. South Africa occupies a singular position in the history of astronomical science: it is home to the oldest permanent observatory in the Southern Hemisphere, its largest optical telescope, and is the site of the world’s largest and most sensitive radio telescope, currently under construction. This largely unacknowledged history is central to the project — and to the book. Throughout The Atlas Folio, photographs of remote observation sites are placed alongside portraits of communities whose lives have been shaped by proximity to astronomy.

Fiscaletti and Grobler trace the extraordinary capacity of the stars to connect cultures across continents and millennia — to locate the human within something far larger than itself.

The book draws its formal inspiration from the great atlases and elephant folios of the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries — the large-format scientific publications that attempted to hold the known world between two covers.

The Atlas Folio is bound hardcover in navy blue viscose bookcloth. Its cover bears a field of screen-printed white stars and black title text. Each page is printed giclée – with museum-quality pigments on photographic paper. Inkjet printing on Felix Schoeller True Matt Baryta 325gsm paper. Each page is printed as a single-sided spread, then folded, with triplex spacers inserted and individual stitching holes punched by hand. Once gathered, the pages are sewn together with the cover and spine using a traditional Japanese stab-binding technique. No glue is used in the construction; instead, the exposed stitching remains visible on the exterior of the book, becoming an integral part of both its aesthetic and physical structure. The book exists in a special edition of three and spans more than a meter wide when open. Each copy exists as a primary work in its own right — made entirely by hand.

For the artists, it represents the ultimate form of a project rooted in analogue photographic mediums, historical literature, physical materials, prints, and installations.

L' Atlas Folio è un libro d’artista di grande formato che rappresenta l'essenza del progetto Hemelliggaam or The Attempt To Be Here Now di Tommaso Fiscaletti e Nic Grobler.

Realizzato nell’arco di più di un decennio, Hemelliggaam — dall'afrikaans «corpo celeste» — è un archivio di fotografie originali, opere video e installazioni che esplorano i profondi legami tra l’umanità, l’astronomia e il paesaggio sudafricano. Il Sudafrica occupa una posizione unica nella storia della scienza astronomica: ospita il più antico osservatorio permanente dell’emisfero australe, il più grande telescopio ottico del continente ed è il luogo in cui è in costruzione il più grande e sensibile radiotelescopio del mondo.

Questa storia, in gran parte poco conosciuta, è centrale per il progetto — e per il libro. Nell'Atlas Folio, le fotografie di siti di osservazione astronomica molto remoti sono affiancate ai ritratti delle comunità le cui vite sono state plasmate da questa connessione con l'astronomia. Fiscaletti e Grobler si concentrano su la straordinaria capacità delle stelle di mettere in relazione culture attraverso continenti e millenni — di collocare l’essere umano all’interno di qualcosa di immensamente più grande di sé. Il libro trae la propria ispirazione formale dai grandi Atlas e Elephant folios del XVII–XIX secolo — le grandi pubblicazioni scientifiche che cercavano di racchiudere il mondo conosciuto in un volume.

L' Atlas Folio è rilegato con copertina rigida rivestita in tela di viscosa blu navy. Sulla copertina, serigrafata, sono presenti un campo di stelle bianche e il titolo in caratteri neri. Ogni pagina è stampata utilizzando pigmenti di qualità museale su carta fotografica. La stampa a getto d’inchiostro è realizzata su carta Felix Schoeller True Matt Baryta da 325 g/m². Ogni pagina viene stampata su un unico lato, quindi piegata, con distanziatori triplex inseriti e i singoli fori per la cucitura realizzati a mano. Una volta raccolte, le pagine vengono cucite insieme alla copertina e al dorso utilizzando una tradizionale tecnica giapponese di rilegatura a punto metallico (stab binding). Nella costruzione del libro non viene quindi utilizzata colla in nessun passaggio: la cucitura a vista rimane visibile all’esterno del volume, diventando parte integrante sia della sua estetica che della sua struttura.

Il libro esiste in un'edizione speciale di tre esemplari e, una volta aperto, supera il metro di larghezza. Ogni copia è concepita come un’opera originale e autonoma — realizzata interamente a mano.

Per gli artisti, rappresenta la forma definitiva di un progetto radicato in processi analogici, nella letteratura, nei materiali fisici, nelle stampe e nelle installazioni.
